Upcoming events presenting research from Intersecciones

July 11, 2019

Dr. West will be presenting research related to Intersecciones at two upcoming events.

Introducing Intersecciones

Intersecciones is a research study being led by Dr. Brooke West examining the sociostructural drivers of substance use, violence and HIV/STI transmission among high risk females who inject drugs in Tijuana. In particular, the study combines detailed information on the physical characteristics of venues, where sex and drug use occur, with data on venue network affiliations to illuminate the sociostructural drivers of substance use, violence and HIV/STI transmission.

Preliminary Results and Observations

  • Women who inject drugs and trade sex in Tijuana face substantial threats to their health and safety.
  • The places where women trade sex and inject drugs, and the social, physical, economic and political aspects of these spaces, set the stage for women's ability to navigate violence and protect their health.
  • High levels of mobility across spaces may play an important role shaping HIV and drug-related risks, but may also provide important information on opportunities for intervention.
