Remembering Karega Fordyce
On September 10, 2026, our community lost a cherished colleague and friend, Karega Fordyce. Karega served as the Program Coordinator for the HEALing Communities Study at the Social Intervention Group (SIG) from 2021 through 2025. He is deeply missed and is survived by his daughter, his large extended family, and his many friends.
Together with his family and friends, we will host a Celebration of Life honoring Karega at the Columbia University School of Social Work on Saturday, November 14, 2026.
“Karega was well-respected by everyone who worked with him,” said Dr. Nabila El-Bassel, SIG Director. “His contribution to our landmark research study was immense. On behalf of everyone at SIG, we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
“I had the honor of working with Karega at NYU,” shared James David, SIG Chief of Staff. “When the opportunity presented itself, I recruited him to Columbia. He was such a talented colleague, but beyond that, his kindness and caring are things I will never forget. I felt so fortunate to know him and to have his friendship.”
“Right off the bat, Karega's warm spirit, quiet confidence, and supportive, kind nature made him an incredible colleague,” said Jodi Watson, Center for Justice Program Manager. “Karega has left a lasting impression on me, and I offer my deepest and most sincere condolences to his family.”
