SIG Reflections: Bronwyn Hill, SIG Next Gen

This past summer, I was able to experience what it’s like to be included in a work environment that is striving to make an immense impact on its community. As a member of SIG Next Gen, I have been given the opportunity to be a member of an inviting team who treated me like a colleague and allowed me to observe meetings and understand the elements of the project.

While working on TechMPower and WINGS+++, I was able to see behind the scenes of building blocks that could make the project a success. I spent much of the time testing and trying to find holes in surveys being used for trials. Small issues like these could have led to incorrect data, though as a team we were able to combat them and make the surveys accurate and able to function properly.

Finally, while working on projects such as TechMPower and WINGS+++, I have been educated about community issues such as Substance Use Disorder and Intimate Partner Violence. Getting to work on studies like these has given me a new perspective on these issues and the people who face them. Specifically, working on WINGS+++ has familiarized me with content I may learn in my upcoming Women and Gender Studies class.

Getting to closely observe professionals who feel passionate about what they do has given me a new outlook on what office work could look like. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with such a collaborative and thoughtful team and to make a small contribution to their essential work.
