Dr. Dawn Goddard-Eckrich: We Must Build HIV Prevention Interventions that Reach Black Women

In "Culturally Tailored HIV Prevention: Empowering Black Women Through Education and Choice," Dr. Dawn Goddard-Eckrich shares findings from the E-WORTH study, which tested the efficacy of a culturally-tailored HIV prevention intervention for Black women who use drugs and are involved with the criminal justice system. Because Black women have disproportionately high HIV rates, and those who use drugs and are involved with the criminal justice system are at particularly high risk, it is vital to ensure that PrEP and other HIV prevention messaging reaches them.

Culturally tailored interventions work as essential approaches to overcome barriers created by systemic inequities.

E-WORTH found that the culturally tailored intervention led to higher levels of PrEP awareness and adherence. Dr. Goddard-Eckrich also highlights the importance of ensuring that HIV education and prevention information reaches vulnerable people, and reflects on the challenges of accomplishing that.
