Just published in New York Daily News: How to save thousands of lives: When bail reform comes, we must do far more to help people who use drugs help themselves

We are pleased to share that SIG Director Dr. Nabila El-Bassel and former SIG T32 fellow and current post-doctoral fellow at the School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry at Yale University, Dr. Philip Marotta, published an article in the New York Daily News on the seven steps needed in the wake of the new bail reforms in New York State. 

Thousands of people in New York State face similar devastating experiences when they cannot pay bail. Fortunately, on Jan. 1, bail reform legislation will end the use of monetary bail, reduce unnecessary pretrial incarceration and improve equity and fairness in the criminal justice system in New York. Bail reform will be of particular benefit for the most vulnerable in New York — people without the financial means to post bail following arrests for drug-related offenses.
