According to recent studies, those Americans who identify as Native or indigenous experience serious psychological distress 1.5 times more than the general population. They also use and abuse alcohol and other drugs at younger ages, and at higher rates, than all other ethnic groups. Yet our nation has yet to address these health and mental health disparities in a rigorous way. In this episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara (bio) sits down with Ph.D. candidate and MSW alumna Ariel Richer (bio) and a colleague of hers, Sutton King (bio), an MPH candidate at New York University, to discuss their ideas about steps that can be taken to improve the situation. Not long ago Richer and King cofounded the organization Urban Indigenous Collective, with King in the role of executive director. The collective aims to provide comprehensive, culturally appropriate health and mental health services to Native and indigenous populations in the tristate area, including early intervention and treatment of substance use disorders, mental health counseling, and recovery support.
